August 2025

August marks the end of our summer season as we know it. School begins, and any last-minute vacations are wrapped up by Labor Day weekend. We prepare for a different vibe as we move into our fall weather; it is important to know that our physical bodies are also transitioning. In Chinese medicine, we are taught that seasonal changes influence different organ systems. Late summer is associated with the Earth element Pancreas and the Spleen and Stomach organs.

The Stomach and Spleen are responsible for digestion, nutrient absorption, and transforming food into energy, all crucial for overall vitality. The pancreas plays a major role in our protein digestion by producing and secreting digestive enzymes into the small intestine. Just a friendly reminder, thorough chewing releases enzymes that help in the process. Chewing each bite 20 times before swallowing would be a good start; then, observe the changes.

Macrobiotic lifestyle supports and respects the influence seasonal changes have on the body. As you practice and implement balanced eating over time, you will intuitively notice and feel the changes. Some may be subtle, and some may be obvious. Late summer’s hot, humid weather can lead to dampness in the body. This can manifest as congestion with cough, poor sleep, brain fog, and even joint pain. Emotionally, you may experience worry or overthinking, which can be linked to an unbalanced Pancreas, Spleen, and Stomach. Moving your body from lying around by the pool to stretching and exercise can help harmonize these organs systems.

In this Saturday’s Cooking Class, I will be addressing what changes to expect and what simple adjustments will support a balanced spleen, stomach, and pancreas. I will discuss the importance of eating regular meals and focusing on warm, cooked foods rather than cold raw foods.

Join us, this Saturday August 16th at 9:30 am CT, for a delicious late summer meal to help you transition into fall in a gentle, nourishing manner.
